For Community Leaders

Economic literacy programs designed for those who inform and communicate with local communities across Colombia.

Community leader presenting economic information to a neighborhood group in Colombia

Who is this program for?

Not everyone who communicates about economic topics to a community audience holds a journalism credential. Community radio hosts, neighborhood association leaders, local bloggers, and grassroots communicators all play a role in shaping how ordinary Colombians understand economic news.

This program recognizes that role and builds the knowledge these communicators need to do it responsibly. The aim is not to turn community leaders into financial analysts, but to give them a foundation for engaging with economic information accurately and communicating it without distortion.

The content is adapted from our journalism programs but delivered at a pace and with examples suited to community communication contexts. No prior economic training is assumed or required.

How It Works

Our approach to community economic education

We build understanding step by step, connecting economic concepts to the situations and concerns that matter most to local communities.

01

Start with Community Relevance

Every session begins with economic questions that matter locally, whether that is inflation affecting household purchasing power, local business closures, or government spending in the community. Abstract concepts are anchored to real experience.

02

Build the Language

Economic terminology can feel like a barrier. We introduce key terms gradually, always with plain-language definitions and examples from everyday Colombian life. Participants build a working vocabulary without being overwhelmed.

03

Practice with Real Data

Participants work with actual DANE reports, central bank bulletins, and public budget documents. They learn to identify what is reliable, what requires context, and what questions to ask when something is unclear.

04

Communicate with Confidence

The final stage focuses on expression. How do you explain a CPI increase to a neighborhood group? How do you describe a budget cut fairly? Participants practice speaking and writing about economic topics for community audiences.
